I began the journey into the world of being a helper when I was in college, a psychology major, and was trying to figure out what was wrong with my mother… Fast forward several years, I learned that what ailed both my mother, myself and our family system was the problem of alcohol addiction. The use of alcohol was a best effort at healing the pain of several generations of significant losses.
I have learned about addiction and codependency and have grown in the program rooms of AA, Alanon and Adult Children of Alcoholics. I became a credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselor in 1979 and worked for 9 years in an outpatient substance abuse clinic.
I received my Masters in Social Work degree in 1988 and worked in the general counseling program of a Family Service Society for 9 years. For the last 20 years I have been providing counseling and therapy in my own clinical social work practice.
Exercise has also always been part of what helps me. I “walk it off” and firmly believe in “move a muscle, change a thought”. In addition to my addictions specialty, I am trained in the use of cognitive behavior therapy, family systems and brief solution focused therapy. More recently I have added some mind body tools and practices to my wellness journey. I have been a student of Kripalu yoga for a few years and became a user and a guide with EFT, “tapping” in 2013. Please explore the “About EFT” link for more information about this healing tool.
I have three favorite life accomplishments:
◊ I have been married to my husband Tom for 27 years and I homeschooled our two sons for 12 years.
◊ I designed and delivered a “horse camp” for 4 and 5 year olds.
◊ I built a cabin by myself with only a chain saw.
